15 Dark Fantasy Books About Demons

Dark Fantasy

Books about demons refer to a broad category of literature that features demons as central elements or themes. These books span various genres, including fantasy, horror, paranormal, and even some religious texts. The portrayal of demons in them can vary widely, from evil supernatural beings to complex characters with their own stories and motivations. In horror, demons are typically portrayed as malevolent entities that terrorize characters, leading to a climactic confrontation. These stories involve possession, hauntings, or other supernatural occurrences.

Many cultures and religions have texts that describe demons or demon-like entities as beings opposed to the forces of good or as representations of evil. Demons in YA fiction are used metaphorically to explore themes relevant to younger audiences, such as identity, morality, and the challenges of growing up. Some books explore demonic entities’ historical and cultural aspects, examining how different societies have perceived and depicted them throughout history.

From a religious point of view, God created angels, demons, and humans. Demons can think, talk, and question but cannot disobey God. They can also be either good or evil, like humans. On average, they live between six hundred and twelve hundred years of peace, which is a very long time to live. But their world and their dimension are completely different than ours. So, while it may seem long to us, it could seem average to them.

In fantasy or mythological points of view, demons can fly extremely long distances. Also, they can shapeshift into any living object they choose to turn into animals, even humans. But they are not allowed to copy our eyeballs. It’s a limitation that they have. Ancient people knew about them, and they have been here since the beginning of time. They have the same type of eyeball, where it’s a diamond shape.

Many books about demons delve into the classic theme of good versus evil, providing a canvas for exploring moral and ethical dilemmas. This leads to a deeper understanding of human nature and the complexities of moral choices.

15 Books About Demons

Demons have the stuff that they need to handle in their dimension. If you look through ancient human history, you will see many studies and discussions about magic and how to use magic. So what if humans back then used magic or summoned demons that helped them lift objects and place them in certain areas?

There is a universal law in religion that humans are not allowed to interact with demons, and demons are not allowed to interact with humans. It is forbidden. So good demons stick to their dimension and don’t interact with good humans. In many stories, demons symbolize internal or external struggles, allowing readers to explore complex emotions and experiences such as fear, temptation, and redemption.

I will discuss 15 books on demons. If you want to know more about demons, then read these books. For fans of horror and suspense, demon-themed books offer intense psychological thrills and chills. They are a source of adrenaline-pumping excitement and engaging storytelling. Let’s go!

Books About Demons List

1. Sawkill Girls

This book is about a girl named Marion who lives on Sawkill Rock, where two other resident girls live. There has been a string of murders not recently but throughout the centuries of women disappearing from here. There has always been a link to a family that lives on Sawkill Rock. So Sawkill Rock takes off almost immediately. It has some gory moments, and there’s a demon in it.

This demon is our main antagonist. It’s devouring, and it has possession. There are some spooky moments in this book. The atmosphere alone would make me recommend this book, and having a demon in it makes it all the better. You will feel cold and shivering on a lonely beach without the sun; sometimes, that’s the rage you want.

2. Girls of Paper and Fire

This is not your traditional demon story. However, there are half-demons and full demons in this story. Demons, in this sense, are going to be the ethereal creatures that resemble animals, autonomous animals, or half human-half animals. So you have steel and moon casts in this book and your regular humans, which are paper casts.

It is a story where Lei, a Paper caste, is taken away from her home and taken to the palace to serve as the concubine for the Demon King. That’s where our chief demon comes in, the Demon King, while other demons are featured in this book. They’re not all evil, but the main demon that will ruin your day is the Demon King.

He’s selfish and chooses to show his power in horrible ways. There are trigger warnings for sexual assault and rape in this book, as they are concubines taken against their will. With that being said, this book is fantastic, and if that is not a trigger for you, I highly recommend it.

3. The Devouring Gray

In this book, the demon is less of a physical creature and more of an ethereal sense. Devouring Gray is almost an alternate world that lives within our own. The founders of this town have been battling against this entity since the beginning of the town’s creation.

However, as the Gray continues to grow, the founders of this town begin to weaken. The powers allowing them to fight off the grey are dwindling. So this is an excellent demon entity, the creepy book where you find some parallel stories.

4. King of Scars

The demon or monster is not the antagonist but the protagonist in this book. The story follows Prince Nikolai, who has quite a battle within himself. This demon is more of an internal demon, as well as being a bit transformative.

The story follows the events of Crooked Kingdom, and it is told from the three perspectives of Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina. A burning angel goes down doors and portals and burns his handprint on it. So, if you want the combination of magic and romance, this book is a must-read.

5. Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices)

This entire series is filled with demon hunters. There’s an entire underground world filled with demons and fay, which is magnificent. There’s quite a humorous moment where two of our main characters are trying to get rid of a demon, and the dialogue between them is incredibly comical.

So this is, again, another book that features demons that aren’t going to be scary and eerie, especially it has quite a bit of fun. I’m pretty fascinated with world-building. The paranormal aspects, historical fiction, and romance are unique to read.

6. Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid)

You have angels and demons warring together, and you have Georgina Kincaid. Georgina is a succubus, which means she has sex to feed off people’s souls, but she hates this. She loves working at her bookstore and has quite a knack for solving mysteries and getting into trouble.

This world is filled with demons. Jerome is one of my favorite featured demons in charge of the Seattle district where Georgina resides. If you like the angel and demon aspect, the series has that and much more. It is an adult book, and it features quite a bit of explicit sexual scenes. So, if that is something that makes you uncomfortable, possibly step away from that. Otherwise, I recommend reading adult books if you are of age.

7. Doll Bones

This middle grade features a group of children who usually play with dolls. However, one of the children is told he needs to grow up and out of it and is expected to play sports. It leads them into their final journey playing with dolls, and it leads them to bury a doll that seems somewhat possessed.

The backstory to this is quite dark as to why this doll is made of bones, but if you’d like to read a book that is both middle-grade and terrifying, Doll Bones will be the book for you.

Zoe’s main character has gone through a tragic loss in her family. She has lost her parents, and now she will be moving in with her aunt. Her aunt will be moving to the town of Torch Creek, Virginia. She starts seeing these dark shadows that seem to follow certain people around, and she doesn’t understand what is happening.

At first, Zoe thinks her parents’ grief is driving her mad. But then she discovers she is a daughter of three and was sent to rid the world of demons and save humanity. It is a fun supernatural read because supernatural books do more with werewolves and vampires. Also, this is solely focused on angels and demons.

9. Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days)

Angelfall deals mostly with angels. You are in a world where the apocalypse has happened, and now angels are on Earth. They are trying to demolish the modern world. Since they came to Earth, they’ve set up a base in San Francisco. So after Warrior Angel is still her sister, our main character, Penrhyn, finds a Warrior Angel lying on the street who has lost his wings.

Then, together, they join forces to go to San Francisco, where the main base camp of the angels is, so that she can get her sister back. Pick this book if you are looking for books that deal with angels and demons.

The story deals with Fletcher, who discovers he can summon demons from other worlds. He is being chased in his village for a crime he did not commit. So, he is forced to go to the academy to learn more about his summoning skills and what it means to summon demons.

But when a sinister force floods through the skull and starts to create enemies, Fletcher must figure out where his loyalties lie. It is because he will soon figure out that the fate of the Empire lies in his hands and the gift that he has of summoning demons. So this series has so many awesome elements to it. First of all, we have a main character who is a guy who can summon demons, which is very interesting.

It is an awesome series if you’re looking for something that solely deals with demons and angels. The whole story is mythical and fantastical but very much grounded in human nature. It has a good versus evil theme that plays with all human feelings and beliefs.
